Maple City lies in southern Leelanau County, in Kasson Township. It is located at the junction of Lewis Road and County Route #616, about six miles south of Lake Michigan. This small town has withstood the test of time, surviving as a result of its location in the middle of one of Michigan’s major tourist areas. It has a few stores and small businesses, and a post office. A major point of interest is the old schoolhouse, a few blocks northwest of the main corner, which has been carefully preserved and refurbished into a business complex.
Maple City was named in 1875 for the huge supply of maple timber that grew in the area. Some of the harvested timber was used locally by a small factory that made wooden shoe pegs.
