MAC Custom Homes is owned by Mike Collings. The name MAC is an acronym for Michael Alfred Collings (Mike’s full name). Over the years, the company has grown steadily and has earned a solid reputation for high quality construction and excellent customer service. As a result, MAC Custom Homes has been entrusted to build many of the finest residences in Northern Michigan. Mike grew up in Farmington, Michigan, where he met and married his wife, Robin. The couple moved to Traverse City in 1980, shortly after the birth of their first daughter. Since then, they have lived and raised their three daughters here. Mike, who began his career as a framer, worked for local framing contractors for several years, before starting his own framing company and eventually becoming a general contractor. This led to the founding of MAC Custom Homes in the mid-nineties. With more than 25 years experience in the construction industry, both downstate and Northern Michigan, Mike is very involved with every aspect of the home building process. He supervises the framing, siding and interior trim crews personally in order to control the quality and timing in each project. In 2006, he received the Green Build Grand Traverse certification. MAC Custom Homes is built on a foundation of trust and hard work, along with excellent craftsmanship.

We chose MAC Custom Homes and its president, Mike Collings to build our lakefront home after interviewing several home designers, interior designers and builders. Mike was an established professional who seemed to encompass skills from all of the above categories. We were out-of-state residents and needed one competent individual to coordinate the home designer and interior designer as well as do the construction. We certainly chose correctly when we chose Mike and MAC. He listened tirelessly to our extensive list of needs and wants. He was patient and positive and assisted us in focusing our thoughts and decisions. During the initial phase Mike developed a sense of the quality that was important to us in all areas of the house. This coincided perfectly with Mike’s own sense of how a house should be built. He directed us to suppliers so we could get a feel for the choices we would have to make and he quoted the project accordingly. This quote was based on his unbending building standards and our desire to create a truly unique custom home. There was no “low-ball” figure that ballooned before completion. Any deviation from the original quote was by our choice and instigation with Mike giving us clear pricing options. MAC stayed with us every step of the way. Mike’s personal integrity and artistic input throughout the building process was reflected in his crew and his sub-contractors. They responded to his minute attention to detail with the same positive attitude he displayed. They weren’t happy unless Mike and we were happy. If something didn’t feel, or look right to Mike, he would create a solution and they would fix it. His ability to “design on location” improved our home and added the special touches that are so important in a custom home. And MAC’s fairness in implementing these changes and new wishes to the house designer’s original plan went beyond what one might expect. Finally, if there is a punch list or other issues after the house is completed (and we would caution that there always are these issues) MAC is the builder you want to be dealing with. They stand behind you and their product. We thank MAC Custom Homes and their wonderful crew for the outstanding job in building our house in Elk Rapids. Having now lived in the house for the summer, we continue to marvel at the craftsmanship and care that you all brought to the project. From our first meeting to the completion of the job, the whole construction process was easy and thoroughly enjoyable. All too many of our friends who have built houses came out of the experience bitter and angry with their builders. They cannot believe it when we tell them that our experience was quite the opposite. Through the construction, we only gained more respect and admiration for the work performed. Mike has an incredible eye for detail, and is uncompromising in the philosophy that the job must be done right. Consequently, although we live for most of the year 300 miles away from Elk Rapids, we had no concerns that things were being done correctly in our absence. Mike astutely stated that people involved in the building trades could be characterized as those who were primarily craftsmen and those who were primarily businessmen. Mike Collings is definitely a craftsman. In addition, he obviously has identified and chosen subcontractors and tradesmen that share a similar belief. Once again, we cannot thank MAC Custom Homes enough for all they have done. We think fondly on the experience every time we walk through the door and take in the beauty and warmth of our new home.

Mike and his team made it possible for our home to win the Parade of Homes for our project size in 2007. Mike is an exceptional Contractor that is "hands on" with his projects. He was extremely helpful with the final changes to our project, in that he had several suggestions for improving the layout of rooms and fine points of materials to be used. We had twelve homes in several states across the US, three of which we had built by very good contractors. Mike is by far the best that we have seen. He insisted on the best subcontractors and followed up with frequent updates for us. Our new home was finished on time and within our budget. Perhaps most importantly, Mike's integrity with his commitments is the best there is.
